Technology has become an integral part in mining. This is visible in North America where mines are using technology to improve communications, and the technology is from a UK-based company, Sepura.
Agnico Eagle Mines has selected PowerTrunk Inc, a part of Sepura Group, to install a TETRA radio network at the Meliadine Gold Mine located in Canada. The mine is an advanced-stage gold project in northern Canada, in Nunavut Territory. It is the second major Agnico Eagle project after the Meadowbank gold mine in the Low Arctic.
Agnico Eagle’s Philip Quessy stated that after successfully using the TETRA radio network at the Meadowbank mine, the company was happy to continue its association with PowerTrunk. Quessy also said that the TETRA radio network was selected because it provided advanced features that fulfilled the company’s needs and was a reliable and effective communications platform.
Meliadine is the second contract that Agnico Eagle has awarded to PowerTrunk. The company will provide secure and reliable data and voice TETRA communications for day-to-day operations in the mine. The company will be providing infrastructure for underground as well as outdoor mining communications, four base stations, hundreds of handheld devices for workers, and advanced mobiles with coloured consoles for communication from vehicles.
Mining contractors may be interested to know that the equipment provided by Sepura has the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions. In the Meliadine Gold Mine, which is located in Canada’s Low Arctic region, temperatures can easily plunge to -40ºC during the winter months.
PowerTrunk Senior VP of Sales David Torres stated that the TETRA communications technology entered the North American market in 2012, and ever since, it has been providing land mobile radio solutions to its customers.
Agnico Eagle has been mining for precious metals since 1957. The mining company has eight mines in Canada, Mexico and Finland. It also has ongoing exploration and development activities in these regions and the US.
